Cooke Brothers - Continuous Hinge. |
|
|
Cooke Brothers has over one hundred years' experience manufacturing continuous hinges or piano hinges. Established in 1872 in the jewellery quarter of Birmingham by the sons of William Cooke, a Lancastrian in the cotton industry. The business concentrated on the production of hinges, prospered and grew, relocating several times within the industrial heart of the city until, in 1960, when a green field site in adjoining Staffordshire was purchased as the base for a purpose built factory. Since then the premises have been extended several times and with the recent acquisition of adjoining properties, Cooke Brothers now occupies a site exceeding three acres, with a further three acres available for future growth. You cannot sell a company on its history alone, however all this experience of combining enterprise and flexibility with caution and tradition are the foundations upon which the company thrives today and out of which has come our range of continuous hinges. Hinges made by Cooke Brothers are acknowledged as world class engineered products by engineers, architects, designers, craftsmen and specifiers world-wide. MASTER HINGE MAKERS SINCE 1872
The wide ranges of sizes and finishes mean that Cooke Brothers continuous hinge applications are virtually limitless. By taking advantage of our in-house design and development capabilities, continuous or piano hinges can be specially made, or existing products modified, for your specific volume requirements

Manufacturing Tolerances and Production Priorities |
|

Standard Continuous Hinges
Hinge Length
Our standard continuous hinges are detailed from page 16 to page 52 and are designed and manufactured to set lengths, usually 1830mm
As supplied, the hinge will have a `free working action` in the hand, and an amount of longitudinal and lateral play (dictated by material and tooling tolerances). The hinge pin will be held tight within the knuckles Modification to the set length of a hinge by the customer after delivery (receipt) may have several affects.
- The hinge pin may become loose and fall out of knuckles
- There will be more noticeable longitudinal play (along the hinge length).
- There will be more noticible lateral play (across the hinge width)
- The hinge action will generally become looser.
However hinges can be manufactured to special lengths eliminating the above problems, please see the special hinge section in the data sheets. It is recommended that if the hinge is cropped or cut to a non-standard length, it should have a minimum of three knuckles. When knuckles are cropped the hinge pin tends to become captive locally to the ends due to the cut edge deforming the hinge knuckle and pin. Ideally the hinge should consist of an odd number of knuckles so that both end knuckles are on the same hinge flap which avoids the hinge pin acting as a torsion bar and resisting efficient operation.
Hinge Width
During the manufacture of our standard range of continuous hinges, priority is given to obtaining the correct hinge open width.
Tolerances on hinge flap and pin material can have a follow on effect on other parts of hinge. The knuckle clearance may vary. The open back angle may vary. The lateral play (across the hinge width) may vary. These could all vary from batch to batch or even hinge to hinge. Customers requirements for a combination of hinge width, knuckle clearance, open back angle and lateral play, can be met.

Standard Holes and Hole Centres |
|
|
Due to the cumulative build up of tolerances during manufacture, standard hole centres may not be consistent from batch to batch or even hinge to hinge therefore the holes will not line up with pre-drilled/pierced holes in customers components. However we are able to pierce special hole sizes and /or hole positions to customer`s drawings, usually by manufacturing parts for our piercing equipment or tools.
