Hinge Specification and Selection |
|
|
All the materials used in producing Phoenix architectural hinges (butt & door hinges) comply with the appropriate standards. Grade 304 Austenitic stainless steels are the main component in the stainless steel ranges.
For installation in very harsh environments hinges can be manufactured, to special order, in Marine grade 316 stainless steel. These grades of stainless steel meet or surpass BS EN 1449 Part 2 1983.
CS4 rolled steel which meets BS EN 1449 Part 1 1991 is used for Phoenix mild steel hinges and Cooke Brothers brass hinges are produced from brass alloys that conform to BS EN 1652 1998.
FINISHES
Architects and specifiers depend on Phoenix hinges to match or complement the finish of the architectural hardware and to retain their appealing looks over many years. Phoenix hinges are normally available ex-stock in satin polished stainless steel.
Other finishes are available to meet the design and styling considerations of new build and refurbishment schemes. These include bright polished stainless steel, satin or bright brass lacquered and antique bronze lacquered finishes.
Mild steel hinges are available with satin zinc, bright zinc, simulated stainless, brass and antique bronze lacquered finishes. These finishes are very durable and only require the minimum care and maintenance throughout a lifetime’s service.

hinges are subjected to rigorous test procedures to ensure that they comply with, and surpass, BS 7352:1990. Products are being designed and developed to satisfy future international standards. There are six test cells in the company’s development section, built to test up to and beyond these standards.
The performance and endurance of Phoenix hinges are tested in accordance with NAMAS guidelines through ‘lifetime’ endurance cycles. In addition to these stringent mechanical tests, hinges undergo environmental simulation testing to determine their level of corrosion resistance.

Hinge Technical Information |
|
|
The appropriate specification and correct selection of hinges is crucial to their performance and depends on the following factors: -
- Door size, weight and construction.
- Frequency of use and the type of traffic.
- The environment and location
Hinges should always be specified to comply with the BS 7352 classification appropriate to the type of application. When specifying, please state the actual door weight and the adjusted door weight.
To assist in selecting the right Cooke Brothers hinges see classification section
NUMBER OF HINGES
Normally three hinges are fitted to each door leaf in accordance with BS 4787 part 1. For doors exceeding 2100mm in height a fourth hinge should be fitted.
HINGE INSTALATION
Hinges should be installed in accordance with the door manufacturer’s recommendations. Where no such instructions are available care must be taken to ensure that the hinges are correctly aligned and fixed securely to door and frame. Screw holes should be piloted and screwheads must be flush with the hinge face to ensure that the door closes properly.
HINGE POSITIONING
It is usually acceptable to line up the centre hinge with the handle hardware. Equally spaced hinges will minimise warping which may occur in environments with extremes of temperature or humidity on either side of the door, Fig.1, a and b. Unequally spaced hinges Fig.1, c and d, improve load bearing. This is recommended where the hinges are operating near their load bearing maximum or where door closers, particularly back check door closers, are in operation and the door is in high frequency use.

Security Hinges, Institution Hinges, Lift -off Hinges |
|
|
Security is inherent in all Phoenix hinges. When fitted to an inward opening door the hinges cannot be attacked from the outside. Where the hinge barrel in the ‘Standard’ hinge range is exposed to possible attack security is provided by both ends of the hinge shaft being riveted over. Security can be further enhanced with built in hinge bolts (dog bolts) these are unobtrusive yet effective, preventing the opening of a door even if the hinge pin is removed and are an option available on most Phoenix hinges. High level security is achieved with welded pin hinges - filling the hinge barrel ends with a solid plug of welded metal removes the risk of the pins being driven out. For very high security applications Cooke Brothers 7160A BT hinge which was developed to meet the exacting demands of British Telecom is available. A range of anti-tamper screws is available to order. Institution, Hospital or Prison safety hinges are made with the hinge pin tips and knuckles radiused and are designed for use in buildings where there is a possible risk of self-inflicted injury.
LIFT-OFF HINGES
Lift-off hinges are handed and must be specified to operate in either a clockwise closing or an anti-clockwise closing direction. The leaf with the pin in the upwards position must be fitted to the frame. Hinge operation is either clockwise closing or anti-clockwise closing and should be specified using the ISO 5 clockwise closing and ISO 6 anti-clockwise closing convention.
ELECTRICAL CONDUCTOR HINGES
Concealed wire conductor hinges are designed for use with electronic entry control and can be supplied with 2,4,6, 8 or 12 wires capable of carrying up to 24v at 2 amps.
FIRE DOOR HINGES
Building Regulations stipulate a minimum melting point of 800ºC for fire door hinges. Cooke Brothers architectural hinges are made from stainless steel which has a melting point of 1530ºC or CS4 mild steel with a melting point of 1550ºC and are all suitable for use on fire doors. When hanging a fire door all the hinges must be bedded on a suitable intumescent material or intumescent mastic on both the door and frame. The Slimline Code 7530 hinge has undergone NAMAS approved testing to BS 476 part 22 1987 for FD120 rating. This is available as a door pack of three hinges and intumescent pads.

Cooke Brothers Phoenix architectural hinges are classified under BS 7352: 1990, and are being developed to meet future international standards on their publication, see the following page.
These are specifications for the strength and durability of metal hinges for side hung applications and dimensional requirements for template drilling. The BS class or EN grade is given according to the maximum mass of the hinged leaf with which they will be used and the maximum annual number of operations.
It is important to remember that the weight of the door hardware and any glass used, can significantly increase the mass of a door and should be taken into account when determining which hinges to specify.
Door closers also increase the loading on hinges; if a door closer is fitted, it is recommended that the effective door mass be assumed to be 20% greater than the actual door mass. Backcheck closers impose even more load and the mass of the door should be assumed to be 75% greater than the actual mass

Standard hinges Phoenix Standard stainless steel hinges have five knuckles with a continuous hinge pin, the heads are riveted over for extra security. The range is ideal for light to medium service, from cupboards to domestic and light commercial doors.
Slimline hinges Slimline hinges are manufactured with thrust bearing washers, giving them the discreet elegance which makes them suitable for installations where styling demands that the architectural ironmongery be as unobtrusive as possible. Phoenix Slimline hinges surpass BS 7352 class 9 and are suitable for installation in situations where they will be subject to heavy duty usage.
Traditional bearing hinges The traditional robust appearance of the bearing hinges and their high performance meet the demands of heavy usage. With a comprehensive range of options these hinges are designed to match the specification for applications where strength and durability are essential considerations.
Lift-off hinges Lift off hinges are designed to facilitate the factory fix production of door sets and provide flexibility in use by allowing removal of doors from their frames for ease of installation and maintenance.
Continuous hinges Phoenix Continuous hinges have multiple knuckles which run the entire height of the door. These hinges can be fitted with dog-bolts and seam welded for extra security. This range is ideal for service in situations where doors will be subjected to very severe use or abuse over a long period of time.
Custom hinges Taking advantage of Cooke Brothers design and development capabilities, Custom hinges are either specially made for particular requirements, or a modification of an existing product to suit your special needs.
Typical Applications:- Based on BS 7352:1990 |
