Cooke Brothers was established in 1872 in the jewellery quarter of Birmingham by the sons of William Cooke a Lancastrian in the cotton industry. The business concentrated on the production of hinges, prospered and grew, relocating several times within the industrial heart of the city until in 1960 a green-field site in adjoining Staffordshire was purchased as the base for a purpose built factory. Since then the premises have been expanded several times and recently the adjacent properties have been purchased to give a current site area of over 4 acres with a further 3 acres available for future expansion.
You cannot sell a company on its history alone however, all this experience of combining enterprise and flexibility with caution and tradition are the foundations upon which the company thrives today and out of which has come the Phoenix Architectural Hinge range. Our hinges are acknowledged as world class products by global professionals.

The production of Phoenix architectural hinges to the high standards maintained by Cooke Brothers depends on a strong engineering base with in-depth industrial experience. Cooke Brothers manufacture special hinges and precision metal pressings for a wide variety of customers and diverse applications in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Cooke Brothers has the capacity for presswork up to 200 tonnes, automated production, tooling, welding, riveting, polishing and plating facilities all at its factories in the heart of the industrial Midlands.
Cooke Brothers, with over a century’s experience of manufacturing hinges for demanding architectural and industrial customers, combines the benefits of up to date manufacturing processes with complete control over design, development and quality management. This is underpinned by a skilled workforce and a comprehensive knowledge of the chosen markets.

Crucial to Cooke Brothers success is the commitment to, and reputation for, high quality and dependable service. The company is proud to have been amongst the first to achieve the nationally and internationally recognised quality standards for manufacturing.
Cooke Brothers gained BS 5750:pt2 in 1988. This included qualifying for EN 29002 and ISO 9002, which were upgraded in 1995 to BS EN ISO 9002. The company added ISO 9001 recognition to its quality management system, certified by the British Standards Institution, during 1998 and this is applied throughout the company to ensure that all the company’s activities comply with the appropriate British and International standards. Two of the Phoenix hinge ranges carry the prestigious BSi Kitemark assuring quality, reliability and performance.
All the company’s employees undertake training in quality and this is recognised within the Investors In People award, which the company has held since 1993.
Quality Assurance is an ongoing commitment and Cooke Brothers is now working to achieve QS9000 and the proposed new standard ISO/DTR 16949.

Cooke Brothers was one of the first companies to achieve IiP, Investors In People status, in 1993.The Company has a long-term commitment to training and personal development, which is reinforced by successful reassessment for the IiP in 1996 and again in 1999.
Apprenticeships and commercial training schemes to degree level are provided as well as training for HNC and BTec qualifications.
Training, with day and block release courses at university and colleges, provide the company with a work force equipped to remain at the forefront of the industry. All employees are encouraged to improve their skills by following NVQs up to level five.
Cooke Brothers is involved in local community education and industry liaison initiatives which are aimed at encouraging young people to enter the engineering industry. The company participates in schools and the Education Business Partnerships scheme, The Princes Trust Volunteer Scheme, Young Enterprise Schemes and has recently been a National Winner of the Business in the Community Award.
